Topical Sentence - Meaning, Purpose, Types and Examples

In grammar, the sentence is defined as the set of words that aims to express something in the full sense, that is, they are words that are combined meaningfully and through language, in order to express a question, request , mandate, description, among others.

On the other hand, there is the topical or thematic operation, which is part of a paragraph in order to understand what it is about and in turn, it can be found anywhere in it. Although the most common is to use it at the beginning of the paragraph, since this way it is much easier to structure it and arouse interest in the reader.

What is topic or topic sentence and what are its types?

The topical sentence or phrase can also be defined as the words used to inform the content that will be developed later, which is usually broad. Basically it is the sentence in which the main idea of ​​the paragraph or text is indicated.

Therefore, topical prayer goals it is to attract the reader and help the writer to structure the subject. And according to what we mentioned, it must be at the beginning to facilitate the work of both individuals.

The structure of the topic sentence follows the same rules as any other sentence, which are the subject, predicate and verb. Example: "Manuel has not gone to the movies"

Although the subject may be "invisible" in some cases (also known as tacit, elliptical, or omitted), that is, it is understood who or what is being talked about without having to indicate it in the text or paragraph. Example: "I have not gone to the movies", where the subject would be "I" despite not being part of the sentence.

Regarding the types of topical sentences, it is possible to find six alternatives according to the structure and the intention of the writer, which are: interrogative, exhortative, doubtful, wishful, exclamatory and enunciative, where each of them has its own meaning.

  • The doubters are those that express a doubt or something that is not certain.
  • The exhortations for their part, they are defined as those that enunciate a prohibition.
  • The enunciative They are intended to convey a specific fact or idea.
  • The interrogatives they are the ones that seek an indirect or direct explanation.
  • The wishes They are used to express a desire.
  • The exclamatory ones they are used to communicate emotions or amazement.
