1) Self-esteem is formed by a set of beliefs that we have about ourselves. If we believe that we are worthless, obviously we will feel bad and it is likely that we can contract a depression.
This concept, the belief we have in ourselves, is what will determine whether or not we have a satisfactory life. It doesn't matter how you behave. If you BELIEVE that you are competent, honest, a good person, ... you will have a high self-esteem and in this way life is more likely to smile at you.
This positive assessment of self-esteem must occur in a spontaneous, automatic or unconscious way.
2) Recent theories about self-esteem suggest that evaluative statements eg "I am good at tennis" They help build and strengthen a positive belief about yourself.
3) Another key factor for building healthy self-esteem is the person's ability to respect and defend their own interests and needs.
4) People with a good level of self-esteem have deeply ingrained a series of values and principles and they are ready to defend them even when they encounter opposition to them.
5) Do not be too critical or rigid with yourself.
6) Know how to intelligently handle criticism from others.
7) Have a assertive attitude before others.
8) Reject perfectionism.
9) Banish guilt from our thoughts. Guilt is one of the most disabling feelings.
10) Have a positive attitude before life. This is not to deny reality.
