What does it mean to mature? according to Àlex Rovira

peter pan syndrome

We live in a society that presents us youth as the most desirable state: We see it on television, in advertising, in movies ...

We are surrounded by models who introduce us to beautiful and young people so we end up consuming vitamin complexes, facial creams and cosmetic surgeries to try to pretend to be someone we are not.

And all this in the physical, because in the psychological the situation is somewhat more difficult. Aging is inevitable but we have to mature.

What is maturing?

By maturing we could understand many things: fructify, evolve ... However, a definition that can serve us a lot as an input is grow in age and judgment. They are 2 different things:

1) On the one hand we can talk about chronological maturity, that is to say, of the passage of time, of the birthday. However, this type of maturity does not imply the 2nd type which is:

2) Psychological maturity: This maturity is the result of reflection. Many times we use the expression "to mature an idea." What does this mean? That we have to meditate or reflect on an idea.

Therefore, maturity is not a natural biological conquest. It is the result of reflection and an exercise of will.

Life is not what happens to us but what we do with what happens to us, understanding "doing" as reflection, emotional experience and action that follows from the previous ones.

Maturing is a continuous transit. We are maturing if we do the work to integrate the positive and painful experiences that life brings us.
