The number of examples was not what they based their self-esteem on, but on the difficulty they had in finding them.
It turns out that this deception of the mind works when people are evaluating a decision.
Ask one person to think of a lot of reasons for changing jobs, marrying a partner, or buying a home. Even though they'll fill out the list, they'll be less likely to think it's a good idea compared to someone who came up with just a few of the reasons that came easily to mind.
