Characteristics of transformational leadership

Have you ever been in a group where someone took control of the situation by conveying a clear vision of the group's goals, a passion marked for work and the ability to make the rest of the group feel motivated and energetic? This person could be what is called a transformational leader.

Transformational leadership is a type of leadership that leads to positive change among those around the leader. Transformational leaders are generally energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate. Not only are they interested and involved in the process but they are also focused on helping everyone in the group to be successful as well.

The history of Transformational Leadership

The concept of transformational leadership was initially introduced by the presidential leadership expert and biographer James McGregor Burns. According to Burns, transformational leadership can be seen when "Leaders and followers work together to advance to a higher level of morale and motivation". Through the strength of their vision and personality, transformational leaders are able to inspire their followers to change expectations, perceptions and motivations and work towards common goals.

Later, the investigator Bernard M Bass developed Burns original ideas and elaborated what is now known as Bass Transformational Leadership Theory. According to Bass, transformational leadership can be defined based on the impact it has on followers. Transformational leaders earn the trust, respect, and admiration of their followers.

The Components of Transformational Leadership

Bass also suggested that there were 4 different components of transformational leadership:

1) Intellectual Stimulation: Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo but also encourage creativity among their followers. The leader encourages his followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn.

2) Individualized consideration: Transformational leadership also involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive relationships, transformational leaders keep the lines of communication open so that their followers do not hesitate to share ideas and so that leaders can offer direct recognition to each of their followers based on their special contributions.

3) Inspiration and motivation: Transformational leaders have a clear vision and are able to articulate it to their followers. These leaders are also able to help their followers experience the same passion and motivation to meet these goals.

4) Idealized influence: The transformational leader is a role model for his followers. Because followers place their trust and respect in the leader, they want to emulate this individual and internalize his ideals.

Teacher in my opinion Transformational leadership is a leadership style that is defined as leadership that creates a valuable and positive change in followers. A transformational person focuses on "transforming" and helping each other, each other.
