Discover your motivations

Knowing what motivates us helps us set our goals

Motivation is what makes it possible to discover and set the objectives of the behavior and understand why it persists or the effort is abandoned. Knowing your own motivations makes the mind less dispersed and more focused on solving the problems that make it difficult to achieve the objectives set.

Sometimes you can have a very strong motive and several not so intense motives. The strongest is also the one that most influences one's behavior and the one that manages to impose itself on others when they cannot all be done at once.

However, the strength of motives can change depending on the moment and with the passage of time.

Those who try to discern what universal motivations may be, have established global categories such as biological, social, self-esteem, achievement, personal growth needs ... which they have organized hierarchically, so that only as the most basic needs are met , the more complex ones are activated.

4 steps to discover your motivations

1) Make a list of the things that make you feel good

Include in it both actions or situations that satisfy you in the short term and those that reward you after a medium or long-term effort.

To find out which ones motivate you the most, you could try to somehow "quantify" the satisfaction they give you.

2) Review everything you have done for a week and see how much time you have dedicated to each activity.

3) Faced with a difficulty, imagine how would you feel avoiding her and how would you face her. Ask yourself if, for you, the effort is worth it.

4) Analyze each of the decisions you make in a day. Generally, people can choose between several behavioral options and choose according to their more or less conscious motivations.
