How to help a person with suicidal thoughts?

Suicide is a complicated and delicate subject to tackle. And even more so when it comes to a relative or close person. That is why many cries for help go unnoticed. Here are some tips on how to offer your support to people who are at risk of suicide.

  1. Listen to her it is a key aspect in suicide prevention. Try to detect signs that indicate possible suicidal thoughts. It is important to listen authentically and show a lot of patience.
  2. Let express. It allows the suicidal person to express their feelings, emotions and thoughts without judging or trying to convince them at all costs that life is precious. There are times when an overly optimistic attitude can be frustrating for someone who is having a bad time, not feeling really heard.
  3. Ask about the reasons that have led the person to contemplate suicide.
  4. Validate the experience of the other, do not minimize. Offering words of support and showing that you are concerned is also critical. The suicidal person needs to know that their existence matters to others.
  5. Do not panic. A suicidal person is emotionally vulnerable and needs strong support.
  6. Take it seriously. Suicidal thoughts must be taken seriously. Research has shown that the vast majority of people who commit suicide directly or indirectly communicate their intentions in the days before.
  7. Maintain a respectful conduct. Do not get into moralistic debates about whether it is okay or not to commit suicide, whether it is fair or not, etc.
  8. Ask about what would happen if that person ends their life (family, friends, aspirations, etc.).
  9. Consider the possibilities of solving the problem and if there is no solution, provide emotional support.
  10. Asking what aspects of your life help you avoid committing suicide and emphasize those positives. It is important to get the person himself to verbalize reasons for living. Therefore, it is recommended to ask questions instead of assuming or stating things.
  11. Speak openly. Suicide is a taboo subject that must be broken. It is common to believe that talking about suicide will encourage action, but it is a totally wrong idea. Ask the person directly, bluntly: "Do you feel so bad that you are thinking about killing yourself?" If yes, ask: "Have you thought about how you would do it?" If the answer is yes, ask: "Have you thought about when and where you would do it?" You need to know exactly what is going through the suicidal person's head. The more elaborate and detailed the plan, the greater the risk. If the person answered yes to all three questions, call an emergency center or hospital right away. There are also specialized services in crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
  12. Do not leave the suicidal person alone. It is important to organize a plan so that the person is safe.
  13. Help the person make an appointment with a psychologist or psychiatrist. When a person presents suicidal ideas, they must be treated by professionals who are trained to carry out an adequate intervention. This is very important. Don't try to go it alone.
  14. Under no circumstances should you keep a suicide confession secret. For now, when it comes to someone's life, you have to act.

Thanks for the tips! In a society that lives in chaos we normally find people like this ... these issues should be discussed and analyzed more ... I would like to ask about a similar issue: bulling, how do I help a person who has suffered bulliyng ?, specifically long after has passed it. I have found information on what to do at that time, but not on what to do next, especially if it is a victim who did not speak at the time. Thanks for everything!!!

Take it to a specialist, preferably a psychiatrist, he will give you medications that stabilize your brain chemical levels so you can get out of any depression. And please don't leave her alone.

My mom doesn't want to go. Refuses. We spend a lot on it, but that's not the important thing. She feels and tells me that she no longer wants to live and that we should not be scared if she is no longer there. I'm worried, we've already been to psychologists, psychiatrists. Specialized doctors. Healers can't be cured

For me they should talk more ... about what do you think you will feel if you take your own life? Why is death a solution? We want to die in a moment of despair .. we want to flee from what we feel or live .. Death is not the end of one, nothing assures us that by dying we will find peace .. death is not an option ..

It is not necessary that they medicate it, they only have to have the support of their relatives but the opinion of an expert is necessary

My best friend cuts herself, they are every day and every time she comes with that, I have asked her why she does it and she says that it is because she is worth nothing, that it is not important, that everything is a lie, that she still lies when she says that he feels happiness and that he regrets his suicidal thoughts. I have told her many times that it is important that there are many people who love her, etc but apparently she does not listen to me and thinks that I do it out of pity but it is not I do it because I really want to help her and I understand her but apart from thoughts suicidal have depression, I need help and more advice please

It is incredible that we do not have more access to public psychologists who can treat a person who needs it if it is not paying or having a visit every two months.

My 20-year-old daughter is very confused, she says that she suddenly disconnects from the world and does not want to live, that it causes her to jump a catwalk or jump into the subway, she once took many pills, without serious consequences. He has been in treatment with various psychologists and psychiatrists but suicidal ideas have continued. Paradoxically, he says that he wants to live, but suddenly his mind is confused and the ideas of taking his life attack him. Her dad and I have always supported her in everything and we please her whenever possible. With a lot of effort she graduated from high school last year, we changed her institution a lot due to the rejection because it is special and sometimes people are unconscious and do not accept people who have a disability. At this moment he is not studying. We as parents are desperate. At this time we are looking for another psychiatrist who has more experience in the area and we hold on to God for support. We talk to her a lot and we don't leave her alone. What else can you suggest to help us resolve the situation?
