Curiosities about poetry.

1) Haiku is one of the popular forms of shorter poetic writing. It originated in Japan. The interesting thing about haiku is that it has only seventeen syllables, with three lines of five, seven, and five syllables respectively.

2) Mahabharata is an epic poem from India. It is the longest poem in the world, with around 1,8 million words.

3) World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21 of each year to appreciate and show support for all poets in the world. It is an initiative of the United Nations for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO).

4) The first type of poem was the epic. An epic features a long narrative (story) of incredible heroic deeds.

5) The Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest written poem. It is said to be around 4.000 years old and tells the story of a king, Gilgamesh, who was half man, half god.

6) A stanza traditionally contains 12 lines. A two-line stanza is called a couplet, and a four-line couplet is a quatrain.
