Suicides on the rise in Spain

In Spain they commit suicide 9 people a day. It is a figure that for the first time exceeds the number of deaths from traffic accidents. Men commit suicide three times more than women.

They are data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). 78,31% are men. Health professionals say it is a figure that can be reduced.

In 2008 3.421 people committed suicide. This figure exceeded for the first time the number of deaths in traffic accidents (3.021). There is a Suicide Research, Prevention and Intervention Association whose president has declared that numerous efforts are made to reduce traffic accidents and, instead, the same efforts are not dedicated to combat this pandemic that is suicide.

Worldwide, a person commits suicide every 40 seconds and it is the leading cause of violent death in the world. One million people commit suicide each year, which exceeds the number of deaths from homicides and wars. In addition, there are more than 20 million attempts per year.

The president of this association, Javier Jiménez, has declared that a quarter of the deaths (250.000 people) occur in under 25 years old. If something is not done, the WHO estimates that by 2.020 the number of deaths by suicide could reach 1,5 million a year.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. These data are intended to make the authorities aware of the importance of the problem and the need to seek solutions to it, since in 90% of the cases people who commit suicide have a psychiatric diagnosis that could be treated.
