Some statistical facts about Down Syndrome

According to data from the World Health Organization, the number of affected by Down Syndrome worldwide is one in 1.100 children who come to the world. Every year, between 3.000 and 5.000 newborns have this chromosomal disorder, which consists of having an extra chromosome 21.

In Spain there are approximately 31.000 people with this syndrome. The good news is that 99% of those affected are happy. Parents, in many cases, take it worse.

According to the data provided by the person in charge of the Down Foundation in Spain, about 96% of mothers who are pregnant with a child with Down syndrome choose to have an abortion, all this despite the fact that in recent times the life expectancy of those affected has increased to 60 years and that these people are increasingly autonomous.
