Teaching is not rosy work. Teachers who are passionate about their work are needed because they will encounter many difficulties along the way.
In this article I have collected 14 things students want from their teachers. As a parent (and a student for many years) I know perfectly well how I would like the perfect teacher to be. I hope this article will spread in the academic field, both among teachers and among students.
1) A student wants his teacher to make the class interesting and fun.
Students have active minds and need a class that transmits energy.
2) A student wants his teacher to be passionate.
Students want a teacher who loves his job. Students can detect if a teacher doesn't want to be there with them. Being enthusiastic about teaching and showing that you love your students can be a key factor in their education.
3) They want a teacher who will gladly help them learn.
The teacher has to show a positive attitude to ensure that the child learns his lessons. This may require all the explanations that are needed and a lot (a lot of patience). The focus should be on the positive learning of the child.
4) They want teachers who can admit their mistakes.
Students are very attentive to their teacher's behavior. They want to know if you are the right person to answer their possible questions. If a teacher admits he was wrong, he will show nobility and honesty about his personality.
5) They want a teacher, not a lecturer.
Students want to be taught. They do not need a teacher who is dedicated to reading a Power point. Teachers should try to tell stories or offer examples to capture the attention of their students.
6) They want a respectful teacher.
Respect is reciprocal. To earn the respect of the students, the teacher has to be approachable, positive, and personable.
7) They want teachers who value their students' time.
It is important to take into account any effort the student makes. The teacher has to show appreciation for his students and a good way is to value the effort and time that the student dedicates to learning.
8) They want teachers who challenge them.
Teachers have to challenge their students, whether it is a class project or challenging them to do some creative task.
9) Students want time to be allowed.
What a teacher is trying to teach can take a long time, so give your students the time and space to absorb their teachings. Time to think, reflect and process.
10) The student wants to be valued.
Students want to know that the teacher has his or her attention on them. The teacher has to make positive comments directed at each student in particular.
11) They want teachers who motivate them to participate in class.
The teacher has to ask questions; letting students share their views on a topic, even if they stray from the topic. Give the student the opportunity to share their thoughts.
12) They want teachers who are forgiving.
The college is not a marine school. Teachers, like students, have to be flexible and easy to get along with.
13) They want teachers who can relate to them.
They want teachers they trust. This means that the teacher has to convey empathy. This takes time and effort.
14) They want teachers who treat all students equally.
Students don't like a teacher who favors certain students over them. They want a teacher who is level-headed and appreciates the effort of each individual student.
