Consequences of not sleeping well

A non-profit organization that supports public education and dedicated to sleep research (the National Sleep Foundation) conducted a survey from which they extracted the following data: 29% of those surveyed reported feeling very drowsy or even having fell asleep at work in the past month on at least one occasion.

When was the last time you went like a zombie to work or study as a result of having a bad night's sleep?

Recent research has linked poor sleep to a wide range of ailments, including memory problems and obesity. Below you have more information about the main consequences of not having a good night's sleep:

1) Learning problems.

Learning problems

Researchers have long believed that sleep plays an important role in memory, and recent evidence suggests that poor sleep at night can impair learning. Researchers in one study concluded that learning a new skill is not consolidated if a person is subjected to sleep deprivation after learning it (Winerman, 2006). Sleep serves to process and retain the information learned while awake.

2) Promotes obesity

Lose weight

In addition to affecting memory and learning, lack of sleep has been linked to body weight. In a 2005 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, it was found that overweight participants slept less than normal weight participants.

Researchers don't yet understand exactly how sleep disruption affects appetite and metabolism, but they conclude that getting a good night's sleep is not going to negatively affect your efforts to lose or maintain your weight.

3) Increase your stress levels.

According to many experts, most people need 7-8 hours of sleep each night. What happens when you don't get enough sleep? Symptoms such as mood swings, anxiety, aggressiveness, and increased stress levels appear.

Experts suggest napping in these cases to combat drowsiness, reduce stress, and increase productivity.

4) Worse decisions are made.

Taking decisions

Making the right decision when you are sleepy is very difficult. In a study published in the journal Sleep, researchers found that sleepiness has a serious impact on the ability to make effective decisions (Roehrs, 2004).

If you are faced with a difficult decision, make sure you are well rested.

5) The immune system deteriorates.

Immune system

Poor sleep increases our stress levels, which is very detrimental to our immune system. Inflammatory diseases are more common as a result of this prolonged overexposure to excessive stress.
